Company B of this unit, which was eventually destined to become the 2d Battalion (HAWK), 71st Artillery was recalled to active service in July 1940 at Fort Story, Virginia. Approximately three years later, the company was redesignated as an antiaircraft artillery battalion. It was moved, less personnel and equipment, from Danville, Virginia to Fort Bliss, Texas and again redesignated and reorganized. On February 29, 1960, Headquarters, US Army Air Defense Center issued General Order #15 activating the 2nd Missile Battalion (HAWK) 71st Artillery where the unit was equipped with the HAWK Missile system. Following the prescribed training period, the battalion was deployed overseas to Korea in the fall of 1960.
