Histories for 607th Combat Operations Squadron

607 COS History through 1997
607th Combat Operations Squadron We Control the Air! History A unit?s history links its past to what it is today. We?re proud of our history and the part we?ve played in shaping 7th Air Force. This is our history. The 607th Combat Operations Squadron activated on 15 December 1994 at Osan Air Base, South Korea, to provide operations support to Combined Forces Command, United States Forces Korea, Air Component Command, and Seventh Air Force. Since then, the unit has performed command and control over all US air activity to include Joint Chiefs of Staff directed reconnaissance missions and Theater Missile Defense. The 607 COS operates and maintains the world?s only joint/combined Hardened Theater Air Control Center (HTACC), while unit personnel handle all airpower warfighting issues, combat search and rescue, and weather support for Air Component Command and Seventh Air Force. Over the years, Tactical Air Control Center Squadrons have performed this mission at Osan AB. The 603rd Tactical Air Control Center Squadron activated on 15 April 1976 under the 51st Composite Wing and 314th Air Division to provide operations support. At the time, the 603 TACCS organized with four main components: Combat Operations, Combat Plans, Combat Intelligence, and Command Advisory Function. In 1981, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces moved the Combat Intelligence division from the 603 TACCS to form the 6th Tactical Intelligence Group. A facilities management component also formed that year to coordinate the development and implementation of improvements being made to the HTACC. On 8 September 1986, PACAF inactivated the 314th Air Division and activated Seventh Air Force at Osan to handle the airpower mission in South Korea. The reorganization created an operations directorate that absorbed the responsibilities and personnel of the 603 TACCS, resulting in the unit?s December 1986 inactivation. The 603 TACCS activated again in October 1990 with its original mission. This function inactivated on 15 December 1994, and its personnel and equipment transferred into the newly organized 607th COS, consisting of eight flights. In 1997 the squadron reorganized, moving TBM and DOY to the 607th Air Support Operations Group to consolidate the air battle management function in a single group.
