Area Support Battalion- Doha (Former 593rd FASCO)
From the 593rd ASG Commander's Bulletin Vol.1, Issue 3;Sept. 21, 1991)
"Responsibility for success belongs to ASB soldiers" By: SPC. Buff E. McFadden
Kuwait is a land ravaged by war. However, with the help of the U.S. Army, the Kuwaiti people are rebuilding their country.
And, as long as there is an American presence in Kuwait, soldiers' basic needs-- food, fuel and shelter--must be met; a mission ably served by a 593rd Area Support Group battalionn.
Formerly called the Forward Area Support Coorfinator Office (FASCO), the unit was recently redesignated the Area Support Battalion-Doha.
"In a nutshell," said LTC Gary L. Smith, ASB-Doha commander, "we provide logistical support for all life support needs on the nighboring compounds, relieving those units of having to care for
themselves, so they can concentrate more on training and maintenaance."
In fact, he said the battalion now plays an even larger support role. They have become the actual doers, rather than coordinators.
With the departure of the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, the ASB has assumed more tasks, including providing water, refueling generators, and providing personnel for the post exchange and
Wolfburger wagon.
If you add to that support missions for Task Force Victory, the North and South Compounds,Monterey, DRAO and the American Embassy, you can see that ASB-Doha, has their hands full.
"Anywhere there's a U.S. soldier, ASB has the support mission," Smith said. "Whether it's uniforms, food, fuel, or whatever, we're involved in some facet of life support for those troops."
