Tour of Duty - 1961 to 1965
8/30 to 11/20/61 Parris Island, South Carolina. The last training platoon (PLT#173) processed through Parris Island in a 13 week program.
11/24 to 1/24/62 Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Combat training. No one told me about night firing an M1 rifle in 15 degrees or sitting on a frozen wooden bench.
1/24 to 12/30/62 Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina. Arrived early one evening with eleven other Marines. Served almost one year with H & S Support Bn. in the Communications - Message Center -
4/9 to 5/6/62 U.S.S. Francis Marion - APA-249 - Exercise for President John F Kennedy. Off to Vieques, Puerto Rico. This was the newest troop ship in the Navy, and it was air conditioned. Knew that was too good to be true. Liberty call in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
U.S.S. Mountrail - APA-213 - Returned to Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina. Loved the salt water showers.
9/6 to 10/23/32 Communication School at Montford Point, North Carolina.
10/26 to 12/5/62 U.S.S. Chilton - APA-38 - Cuban Missile Crisis. Short layover in Norfolk till crisis died down.
2/4 to 6/6/63 U.S.S. Rushmore - LSD-14 - Mediterranean Cruise. Military exercises and ports of call were made at the following: Naples, Italy; Izmir, Turkey; Rhodes, Greece; Athens, Greece; Cannes, France; Barcelona, Spain; Corsica, Sardinia; Marmaris, Turkey; Rota bay, Spain; and Timbakion, Crete.
10/5 to 10/18/63 Demolition and Mine Warfare School
12/4 to 21/27/64 U.S.S. Rushmore - LSD-14 - Vieques Cruise. Military exercises and ports of call were made at the following: Vieques, Puerto Rico; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Ft. Sherman, Panama; Gatun Locks, Panama; Coco Solo, Panama; Cristobal, Panama; Vieques, Puerto Rico; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Guantanamo bay, Cuba' St. Thomas, Virgin Isles; Fort de France, Martinique, West Indies; La Guiara, Carcaus, Venezuela; Port au Prince, Haiti; Cat island, Bahamas.
10/7 to 11/27/64 U.S.S. Plymouth Rock - LSD-29 Spain Cruise. Military exercises and ports of call were made at the following: Huelva, Spain; Rota Bay, Spain; Santa Cruz de Teneriffe and Los Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands; Bermuda.
2/10 to 7/22/65 U.S.S. Rushmore - LSD-14 - Mediterranean Cruise. Military exercises and ports of call were made at the following: Alcudia bay, Mallorca; Naples, Italy; Aranci Bay, Sardina; Messina, Sicily; Santa Manza, Corsica; Izmir, Turkey; Lebedos bay, Turkey; Golfe Juan, France; Palma, Mallorca; Mazzarow, Spain; Rota Bay, Spain; Andoy, Norway; and Edinburg, Scotland.
Received the Royal Order of the Blue Nose. On the 26th of June, 1965, while serving with the officers and men of the USS Rushmore, I did appear at the Artic Circle, Longitude 10E and was extended all the Honors, Rights and Privileges due a Qualified Bluenose.
8/6 to 10/22/65 Cherry Point, North Carolina - Home of the Marine Air Wing.- Swampex65 - Prepare the new recruits (grunts) for life in the field before being shipped off to the rice paddies of Vietnam.
