Histories for USS Coontz - DDG 40

WestPac 1966 Navy Unit Commendation
The Secretay of the Navy takes pleasure in commending USS COONTZ (DLG-9) for service as set forth in the following: CITATION: For exceptionally meritorious service from 14 Febuary to July 1966 while serving with the United States SEVENTH Fleet in support of military operations in Southeast Asia. During this period, USS COONTZ rendered distinguished service through the rescue of many downed airmen and by conducting antiair and surface warfare operations. Particularly noteworthy were the ship's contribution to the destruction of three enemy motor torpedo boats and the subsequent capture of some of their crews (19 North Vietnamese sailors), and the control of intercept aircraft which inflicted costly damage to the enemy. The splendid record of achievment accomplished by USS COONTZ in the face of hazardous circumstances attests to the professional competence, courage, teamwork, and diligent efforts of her officers and men. Their inspiring devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. All personnel attached to and serving on board USS COONTZ (DLG-9) during the period desginated above are hereby authorized to wear the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. Paul H. Nitze Secretary of the Navy
