USS Iowa - BB 53/BB61 - History
The third Iowa (BB-61) was commissioned 22 February 1943. The battleship sailed into the North Atlantic in August 1943 to neutralize the threat of German Battleship Tirpitz. In fall 1943, Iowa carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Teheran Conference and returned him to the United States. In January 1944, Iowa entered the Pacific Theatre and her combat debut in the Marshalls. She participated in operations at Truk, Hollandia, Marianas, Palau, Leyte Gulf, Okinawa, and other Pacific raids 1944-45. Iowa joined UN Forces in the Korean conflict from April - October 1952, bombarding enemy targets at Songjin, Hungnam, and Kojo, North Korea.
Active Service: WW2 Feb 43 ? Mar 49; Korean War Aug 51 ? Feb 58; 600 Ship Fleet Apr 84 ? Oct 90.
Awards: Nine battle stars for World War II service and two for Korean service.
