USS Antietam - CVS 36 - History
The second Antietam (CV-36) was commissioned on 28 January 1945. She was in the final stage of crossing the Pacific when the war ended. The carrier remained in the Far East for more than three years. The Yellow Sea constituted Antietam?s primary theater of operations while her air group observed and provided support for the Allied occupation of North China, Manchuria, and Korea. In 1949 Antietam was deactivated, but recommissioned in January 1951 for the Korean conflict. Antietam began the only combat deployment of her career in October 1951 with Task Force 77.
