USS Wasp - CVS 18 - History
The ninth Wasp (CV-18) was commissioned on 24 November 1943. In May 1944 Wasp launched her first combat strikes in raids on Marcus and Wake Islands. She participated in operations in Marianas, Western Caroline Islands, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and in strikes against Japan. Battle damage in March 1945 forced Wasp to return to the US for repairs. She reentered action in late July 1945. Wasp was mothballed from 17 February 1947 to 10 September 1951. In October 1952 she was redesignated CVA-18, and in November 1956 redesignated CVS-18. Decommissioning ceremonies for Wasp were held on 1 July 1972.
Awards: Wasp earned eight battle stars for her World War II service.
