Sinkin in Athens
I was coming back from liberty in Athens 1971 on a liberty launch. As I looked at the ship it was very apparent Sara was down at the stern. We were told a large inlet pipe had burst in an engineering space. I really felt bad for the ship's company that worked twelve hour shifts replacing insulation, they looked half dead when they came out of the space. After a week of repairs we when out to continue the cruise. We weren't out but a few hours when the other inlet pipe in the same engineering space burst and we were dead in the water. After quite a few hours we limped back to Athens on one engine. We were in Athens about another three weeks while repairs and insulation was replaced again. I remember from then on as we continued the cruise the insulation that was used must have been of poor quality, because it kept catching fire.
