"Sinking Sara"?
I was onboard when the Sara sank alongside the pier in Mayport in fall of 1958. The story I heard was that some new boot in the boiler room opened a scuttling valve (not knowing what it was) and sank the ship (we had over 40 feet of water inside the hull) because all the watertight doors were open. We had to limp up to Brooklyn Navy yard and spend the winter undergoing complete overhaul of engines, gears, electrical system, etc. Anyone else onboard at this time that can confirm this piece of history? cm
