USS Philippine Sea - CV 47 - History
Philippine Sea (CV-47) was commissioned 11 May 1946. On 29 January 1947 in the Antarctic region of the South Pacific, Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd and his party were flown from Philippine Sea to begin polar explorations from Little America. Philippine Sea sailed into action off Korea as flagship of Task Force 77 in August 1950. Her designation was changed to CVA-47 in October 1952. Philippine Sea steamed west on her last 7th Fleet deployment in January 1958. Decommissioned 28 December 1958, she was redesignated Auxiliary Aircraft Transport, AVT-11, on 15 May 1959.



Awards: Nine battle stars for Korean service.
