I was ashore waiting to report aboard for my new duty station when this crash took place. I remember not being able to contact home due to the phone lines being jammed for days it seemed. When i finally got aboard it was still chaos all over and a big clean-up in progress. As well as immediately going to Portsmouth,Va. shipyards for repairs from fires and bomb blasts topside.......... I also remember the "scuttelbutt" all over the ship from the events of that tragedy. It sticks in my brain to this day. I remember my family being worried, because they had not heard from me for a few days after the event.Boy, what a time.........I don't recall anything like it since the Forrestal fire in the 60's
