9th Engineer Battalion - History
9th ENGINEER BATTALION



Constituted 15 May 1917 in the Regular Army as the 2d Battalion, Mounted Engineers and organized 21 May 1917 at Camp Newton D. Baker, El Paso Texas. Redesignated as 9th Engineers (Mounted Battalion) during July 1917. Assigned to 15th Cavalry Division on 27 November 1917. Relieved from the 15th Cavalry Division on 22 March 1919. Battalion, less Company A, inactivated 1 October 1921 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Assigned to the 2d Cavalry Division on 24 March 1923. (Company A inactivated 19 April 1930). Redesignated 1 July 1930 as 9th Engineer Squadron. Activated 1 November 1941 at Fort Riley, Kansas. Relieved from the 2d Cavalry Division, reorganized and redesignated 9th Armored Engineer Battalion and assigned to the 9th Armored Division on 15 July 1942. Inactivated 13 October 1945 at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia. Reorganized and redesignated 9th Engineer Combat Battalion and relieved from the 9th Armored Division on 17 December 1951. Activated 21 January 1952 at Fort Lewis, Washington. Redesignated 10 June 1953 as the 9th Engineer Battalion (Combat). Assigned to the 3d Infantry Division on 16 October 1991. Relieved from the 3d Infantry Division and inactivated 15 August 1992 in Germany. Assigned to the 1st Infantry Division and activated 16 February 1996 in Germany.

GOAT OF ARMS

SHIELD:Gules, a chevron wavy between in sinister chief a horse's head erased and in base a mullet, all argent; on a canton or an anchor debruised by two oars in saltire of the first.



CREST:On a wreath of the colors (argent and gules) a Gila monster statant proper.



MOTTO: Asistiremos (We will Assist).



Red and white are the colors of the Corps of Engineers. The wavy chevron shows the service of the unit along the Rio Grande and the horse's head, its original mounted status. The star is the lone star of Texas. The device in the canton is from the coat of arms of the 2d Engineers and shows the origin of the cadre from which the battalion was organized in 1917.



DISTINCTIVE INSIGNIA

The insignia is the shield, crest and motto of the coat of arms.
