Histories for 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment

2nd Infantry Regiment History
The 2nd Infantry Regiment is one of the Army?s oldest regiments, having been constituted on 12 April 1808 as the 6th Infantry. First committed to combat during the War of 1812, it fought along the Canadian Border at Chippewa and Lundy?s Lane, and later campaigned against the British in the South during the period leading up to the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815.

The 2nd Infantry assumed its current name during 1815 when it consolidated with several regiments that had been formed during the War of 1812. It served in the Florida campaigns against the Seminoles in the years that followed. During the Mexican War, it participated in most of the major battles, including Vera Cruz (9 March 1847), the first major amphibious action conducted by the U.S. Armed Forces, during which General Winfield Scott landed a force of 10,000 troops. It also participated in the battle for Mexico City (Chapultepec battle honor), the first time in which the American flag was raised over a foreign city. Following the Mexican War, the regiment served in California.

For most of the Civil War, the 2nd Infantry served as part of the 18th Division, V Corps. It was present at most of the major battles in the East, including First and Second Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Petersburg. Today?s 2nd Infantry also bears battle honors from the West through its 1866 consolidation with the 16th Infantry. This unit was present at major battles in that sector, including Shiloh, Chickamauga and Chattanooga.

Between 1865 and 1944, the 2nd Infantry?s only combat action was at Santiago during the Spanish-American War. Assigned to the 5th Infantry Division during World War II, the regiment trained in Northern Ireland before landing in Normandy following D-Day. It was part of the force that liberated Luxembourg and fought off the last major Nazi offensive in the Ardennes in January 1945.

Battalions of the 2nd Infantry Regiment earned 11 campaign credits during the Vietnam War as elements of the 1st and 5th Infantry Divisions. The regiment?s credits from this conflict include both of the Tet Counteroffensives. The last of the regiment?s battalions returned from Vietnam in 1970.

More recently, the 2nd Infantry?s 2nd Battalion has served with the 1st Infantry Division as part of Task Force Eagle.
