Chronological History
Constituted on 28 August 1942 and activated 15 November 1942 at Camp Chaffe, AR.Organizied as a heavy division with the 47th and 48th Armored Regiments and the 62nd Infantry Regiment.
Division reorganized as a light division on 20 September 1943, with 3 Infantry Battlions (the 19th, 62nd and 68th) and 3 tank battalions (the 25th, 47th and 48th).
Embarked for the ETO from Camp Shanks, NJ on 13 October 1944 and arrived in marsailles, France on 29 October 1944.
1st elements of the division entered combat in the French maritine Alsps on 14 November 1944. The entire division entered combat on November 20, 1944 in the Vosges Mountains and assignment to the 7th Army. The division spent 133 days in combat.
The division crossed into Germany on December 16, 1944 and crossed the Rhine River in the vicinity of Worms on April 1, 1945. At the end of the war the division was located in Bavaria.
The division and its elements were deactivated at Camp Patrick Henry, VA on September 16, 1945.
