14 Dec WWII (Robert Gamble)
As a AMVET, I was delivering fruit baskets to WWII veterans, one of them was in the 553rd during the war, he says it was part of 3rd Army attached to George Patton and did a lot of bridge work for the 3rd Army.

I Was stationed there in 1956-1958. Our main mission was to get Militrary families out of Europe if there was an invasion into Germany. We also maintained a gas depot in Sourhtern France.
28 Jun Parts of 553rd Morphed into the 83rd (Al Jacobson)
After the 553rd left France the two comapnies that remained relocated to Neu Ulm, Germany (Nelson barracks unless my memory fails me). As I have said before those copanies became the 68th and the 78th and were attached to other units. By mid-1968 the 78th had become Company B of the 83rd... More
11 Sep "History" badly needs updating (Douglas Wargo)
The histotry of the 553 up until it's disbanding in Orleans, France in 1966 seems to be fine. Can anyone write a post-1966 history that can make... More
21 Oct Correction 78th was attached to 24th Infantry (Al Jacobson)
I incorrectly stated that the 78th Engineers was attached to the 23 Infantry. It was a tyographical error. Make that the 24th Infantry.
21 Oct Not the 76th Engineering Company - the 78th. (Al Jacobson)
When the 553rd was disbanded two companies stayed in Europe and were moved to Neu-Ulm, Germany. They were the 68th and 78th Engineering Companies. Company C became the 78th Engineering Company. That was in 1966, I believe (have to go pull some old paperwork to know for sure). The 78th eventually... More
24 Feb 553RD ENGINEER MAISON FORTE (George Mutter)
THE 553RD WAS FORMERLY THE 982ND ENGINEER BATTALION WHICH WAS DEACTIVATED APPROX. SEPT OF 1954.
05 Mar 553rd EB Deactivated (Moses Rodriguez)
Soon after the deactivation of 553rd EB two construction companies were activated, 63rd and 76th Construction Companies. Both were assigned to construction projects in Germany.
22 Jul 1965 Jeannne d' Arc Parade (Jim Greene)
On may 8th, 1965, the 553 EBC from Maison Fort joined other units from Comz including the 76th Army Band to march in the 536th anniversity celebration parade in the streets of Orleans. This was the last parade in Orleans involving the 553rd before the battalion was deactivated in 1966.
