The U.S. Army not a peacetime army due to the Vietnam War, the Korean War never ended because there was never a treaty, and the Cold War going on thirty years at my arrival. I was a combat soldier serving in the Mechanized Infantry at age seventeen, toting automatic/semi-automatic weapons, performing reconnaisance patrols, and sentry duties. All United States Military Servicemembers based in Europe were part of an initial invasion (force) should it have been necessary.
