Constituted 13 January 1941 in the Regular Army as the 72d Tank Battalion (Medium).
Redesignated 12 May 1941 as the 752d Tank Battalion (Medium). Activated 1 June 1941 at Fort Lewis, Washington. Departed the New York Port of Embaraktion on 5 August 1942 and arrived in England on 18 August 1942. Committed to combat and landed in North Africa on 17 January 1943. Combat in Italy 12 January 1944. (From 21 March 1943-18 January 1944 this unit was also known as the 2642d Armored Replacement Battalion (per 3d Indorsemetn, Hqs Fifth Army which GO #31 inactivating the Tank Battalion was rescinded.) Inactivated 10 August 1947 at Bolzano, Italy.
Redesignated 323d Heavy Tank Battalion, 25 January 1949 and allotted to the Organized Reserve Corps. Activated 25 February 1949 with Headquarters at Newark, New Jersey; inactivated 31 July 1950. Withdrawn from Organized Reserve Corps, redesignated 29th Tank Battalion, allotted to the Regular Army, and assigned to the 2d Armored Division, 27 October 1950. Activated 10 November 1950 at Fort Hood, Texas with Negro personnel.
