Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan


The Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, is located on the main island of Honshu, Japan, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) South SouthWest of historic Hiroshima. The air station is bordered on the East side by the Inland Sea, and is noted for the interestingly cold winters and warm summers. The air station was utilized by the Japanese Air Forces as a fighter trtaining and defense base during WW2; in addition, was also used as a Home Defense base. In the latter stages of the Viet Nam War, it was the Headquarters for the First Marine Aircraft Wing, (Rear), and redesignated as Headquarters, 1st MAW, in 1971. The newspaper "The Torii Teller" serves as the newsletter for the community, with a local radio and television, The Far East Network (Armed Forces Network Television) providing excellent programming.
