Amphibious warfare vessels deliver ground forces to enemy shores, Along with the equipment they require to gain a foothold and push inland. Seven types of ships accomplish these missions in the modern navy, using a range of specialized technology. Tank landing ships extend bow ramps that reach directly to the beach. Dock landing ships have well decks for floating landing vehicles until they are released out a stern gate. The larger assault ships also have flight decks - the Tarawa class is the second largest type of ship in the navy. Helicopters lift supplies and vehicles and provide air cover for landing troops. Amphibious warfare vessels launched every major campaign of WWII; more recently they have participated in humanitarian assistance missions, such as the efforts in Somalia, and in peacekeeping and rescue operations worldwide.
