Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) Sugar Grove is a geographically isolated base in Pendleton County, West Virginia. The only activity duty military installation in the state of West Virginia, its mission is to conduct communications research and development for the Department of the Navy and various elements of the U. S. Government. The base is small, just 611 acres, and has 219 military personnel and 115 civilian employees assigned, along with 180 family members, the majority of whom live in 80 units of government housing on the base. Established in 1956, NSGA Sugar Grove comprises two sites, the riverside Main Base and the mountaintop Operations Facility, approximately 5 miles apart.
