A.U.T.E.C. (Atlantic Underwater Test and Evaluation Center)Andros Island, Bahamas

A.U.T.E.C. (Atlantic Underwater Test and Evaluation Center), is located on the large island identified as Andros Island, Bahamas. The primary mission is conducting underwater Anti-Submarine Warfare Testing/Evaluation for the United States Navy. The main area is also known affectionately as 'TOTO', for "Tongue of the Ocean" as that particular area range has a measured depth of 1,000 fanthoms (6 thousand feet), and the people there are somewhat members of "The Thousand Phantom Club". The members therre are made up of civilian technicians and US Naval personnel; and is jointly operated by the United States Navy, British Royal Navy, civilian contractors, and the Bahamian Government. I was assigned there from October 1975 until February of 1977 jointly with the Base Fire Department as well as the Marine Department, as a Torpedo Recovery Specialist. The local homor was that we were 'smack dab' in the infamous 'Bermuda Triangle.
