Organized 1 June 1864 in the New York State Militia as 74th Infantry Regiment at Buffalo. Reorganized in May 1861 (with some elements in State service) to form nucelus of 21st Regiment, New York State Volunteers, and mustered into Federal service 20 May 1861 at Elmira (New York State Militia redesignated 18 May 1862 as New York National Guard). Mustered out of Federal service 18 May 1863 and reverted to state contraol as 74th Infantry Regiment.
74th Infantry Regiment mobilized 19 June 1863 at Buffalo; mustered into Federal service 4 July 1863 at Mount Union, Pennsylvnia, mustered out of Federal service 3 August 1863. Mustered into Federal service 16 November 1863 at Buffalo; mustered out of Federal service 16 December 1863 and resumed State status as 74th Infantry Regiment.
Elements of the 74th Infantry Regiment reorganized to form lst Battalion, 202d New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment and mustered into Federal service 19 July 1898 at Buffalo; mustered out of Federal service 15 April 1899 at Savannah, Georgia, and reorganized in the New York National Guard as 74th Infantry.
74th Infantry mustered into Federal serive 2 July 1916 for Mexican Border service, mustered out of Federal service 24 February 1917.
74th Infantry called into Federal serice 28 March 1917 and drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917 (on 1 October 1917, apporoximately 1600 men were transferred into the 108th Infantry, 106th Field Artillery, and 102 Engineer Regiment, elements of the New York 27th division (74th Infantry, New York Guard, organized 22 November 1917 for state service).
74th Infantry reorganized and redesignated 4 January 1918 as 55th Pioneer Infantry. Organized at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina. Stationed at Camp Stewart, Virginia in September 1918 and departed the Port of Embarkation, Newport News, Virginia arriving in France the same month. Returned to the United States and demobilized 8 February 1919 at Camp Hill, Virginia.
55th Pioneer Infantry reconstituted and consolidated 22 April 1919 with 74th Infantry, New York Guard, and consolidated unit redesignated 74th Infantry in the New York National Guard.
74th Infantry redesignated 18 October 1921 as 174th Infantry. Inducted into Federal service 16 September 1940 at Buffalo as an element of the 44th Division (later Infantry Divisio). Moved to Fort Dix, New Jersey 24 September 1940; transferred to Camp Clairborne, Louisiana 16 January 1942 and to Fort Lewis, Washington 4 May 1942; relocated to Ojai, California 5 January 1943 and San Francisco, California 27 January 1943 where relieved that same date from assignment to the 44th Infantry Division and assigned to Western Defense Command. assigned to III Corps 22 January 1944 and moved to Camp White, Oregon 4 Febraury 1944; transferred to Camp Chaffee, Arkansas 2 March 1944 under XVI Corps and assigned to XXXVI Corps 17 July 1944; relocated to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma 9 December 1944 and to Camp Rucker, Alabama 3 April 1945 under Replcement and School Command. Inactivated 26 September 1945 at Camp Rucker, Alabama.
Assigned 27 September 1945 to 27th Infantry Division. Reorganized and Federally recognized 15 April 1947 at Buffalo (27th Infantry Division reorganized and redesignated 1 February 1955 as 27th Armored Division).
174th Infantry broken up 1 Febraury 1955 and its elements converted, reorganized and redesignated as follows: 3d Battalion (less Companies I, K, and L and plus Companies F and H and Tank Company) as 274th Tank Battalion, an element of the 27th Armored Division.
(Headquarters, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battlaion; and Companies G, I, and C as Headquarters and Service Company, and Companies A, B, and C, respectively of 174th Armored Infantry Battalion.
Headquarters Company as Headquarters and Headquatrers Company, Combat Command C, 27th Armored Division;
1st Battalion [less Companies C and D] as elements of 336th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion;

Medical Company as Company C, 134th Medical Battalion [hereafter separate lineage]).
Reorganized and redesignated 16 March 1959 as 174th Armor, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the lst Medium Tank Battalion, an element of the 27th Armored Division.
