From introducing raw recruits to the rigors of military life to training the new generations of Air Force mechanics, technicians and pilots, the Air Education Training Command has figured prominently in the history of air power. The command, based in Randolph Air Force Base near San Antonio, includes two numbered air forces (the second and the nineteenth), the Air Force Recruiting Service and the Air University. The command was formed in 1993 from the previously named Air Training Command. The ATC trained more than 13 million people after being formed in 1942 as the nation began mobilizing for World War II.
