Fixed Wing - Patrol Squadrons

VP-56 : Patrol Squadron 56

Patrol Squadrons are land-based, and fly P3 Orions, a slower aircraft a very long maximum range of 2,380 nautical miles. Primarily engaged in antisubmarine warfare, patrol squadrons can also lay mines, bomb targets and carry missiles. They are equipped with infrared, acoustic and magnetic detection devices for subchasing. The four-engine, turboprop P-3C Orion has been patrolling for the navy since 1958. A crew of ten launches torpedoes, air-to ground missiles and cruise missiles against its submarine targets. The P-3C AIP was first deployed in 1998 with an antisurface warfare upgrade. These newer aircraft are currently deployed in the Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean and elsewhere, and have flown successful combat missions over Kosovo.
