USS Taylor - FFG 50

USS Taylor (FFG 50) is named in honor of the late Cmdr. Jesse Junior Taylor, a naval aviator who was killed when he attacked enemy forces in defense of a downed pilot. His namesake is a 4,100-ton Perry-class guided missile frigate, commissioned on Dec. 1, 1984, and homeported in Mayport, Fla. Like other frigates in the Oliver Hazard Perry class, the Taylor fills the Navy's need for one ship able to protect military and merchant shipping, carrier and amphibious task forces, and underway logistics groups. These ships incorporate command and control functions with shipboard weapons systems and sensors to rapidly detect and evaluate threats.
