The keel for USS America (CV 66) was laid on Jan. 9, 1961, at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Va. The America had an active 31 years of service, deploying to Vietnam, Libya, the Persian Gulf and the former Yugoslavia. The ship earned eight battle stars for her contributions to the Persian Gulf and Vietnam wars. Just months after returning from the Persian Gulf in February 1996, the ship was decommissioned on Sept. 30.
