The fifth Independence (CVA-62) was commissioned 10 January 1959. She responded to the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and blockade of Cuba. In 1964 Independence was the first Atlantic Fleet carrier to deploy to the South China Sea in support of Vietnam operations. The Operation Urgent Fury, action to liberate the Caribbean nation of Grenada in 1983, Independence again projected her power. In August 1990, Independence acted to deter Iraqi aggression during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
