Activated at Camp Greene, N.C., the 3rd Infantry Division fought bravely in World War I, World War II, Korea and Operation Desert Storm. The Division earned its nickname during the Battle of the Marne in World War I, when it held its position even as surrounding units retreated. Among the distinguished soldiers from the 3rd Division in World War II was Lt. Audie Murphy, the most decorated U.S. soldier of the war. Today, the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) is based at Fort Stewart, Ga.
