4 Steps of Overseas Adjustment
There are four recognized steps of adjustment for anyone going to and spending time in another country and culture.
Step 1
The tourist step.
No matter where you go and how serious the circumstances, whether it is business, missionary work, or a deployment into a hostile area, our first impulse is to grasp the new unfamiliar surroundings. It is a good step, there are many different and unique things on this planet.
Each step will vary with the individual as to the time and duration of the step.
Step 2
The getting acquainted step.
Now that a person begins to grasp the new environment. The unfamiliar that seems so weird and strange now seems to have certain reasons and purposes. The tourist is becoming a part of the new surroundings.
Step 3
The Functioning Step.
Having gotten familiar with the new surroundings a person can now function in the new area and culture. Destinations are known, some language and communication might be accomplished. Goals are more easily established and achieved. The person becomes even more united with the new culture.
Step 4
The Return:
Usually an encounter into another country and culture is going to be a mix of good and not so good or even bad experiences. Regardless of the experiences it is now time to return home. But, here is the "Rub" having experienced a new and unique culture you are no longer the same. You are not the one culture person you once were, now you will leave the area and go to another place or return home. Wherever you go it will not be the same as what you have left. Once you get home there are some positive steps you can do. Talk positively about the people and places you were, this will help to keep a perspective on good and bad experiences
Recognize that you are not the same anymore. Allow yourself the growth that you have experienced. We have broadened our horizons. We have gone over to the other side of the hill and have experienced what is over there and we are better for it.
