Patty
I was on the USS Nevada during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Captain of the Nevada was a Captain Scanlan, who was not on the ship at the time of the attack. The Donald K. Ross you refer to was on the ship during the attack. At the time he was a Warrant Machinist. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions that day and did go on and advance to the rank of Captain. The Nevada was towed back to Bremerton for repairs and while the ship was under tow, Machinist Ross was the senior officer on board. He later took great delight as refering to himself as the Captain of the Nevada.
Wish I could give you more information.
