It was a terrible, challenging time that many today are only beginning to appreciate, thanks to Tom Brokow's "Greatest Generation" and Tom Hanks' "Saving Private Ryan." My Dad spoke of a time on Okinawa when he stacked dead bodies to set them on fire for disease control purposes, and a man "playing dead" jumped up after gas had been applied and yelled to stop. Does that sound reasonable to you? I got the impression he got a lot of "additional duties" like that one. He suffered from nightmares for years after Okinawa. So it sounds like you missed the so called "mop up" operation that began on June 23, correct?
