To Daniel Heidegger
It is a possibility that my father served with yours - do you happen to know what area your father was in circa December 1944? I posted a prior message that goes into some detail about my father's experiences.
I lost my father in 1971 due to a heart attack at age 49. I don't think his vivid war experiences ever left him. Ever.
But he didn't talk about them to me. I think he told his sisters and father some of what happened, and my mother, probably right after he came back in '46, but then, like many veterans repressed it after that. I remember going to New York for a 20th reunion of the either the regiment or the division - in 1964-1966 - I was only 10-12. Very hazy.
I study World War II history, and try to read up on any war history that is remotely close to the area where he, and probably your father were. The famous panzer commander Von Luck was operating very close to the 100th.
