Father @ Bettviller Dec 30, 1944
My father, Walter E. Scribner, Jr. as stated above, fought at Bettviller, France on Dec 30, 1944 and with 5-6 other men, was awarded the Bronze Star. In the 100th Division "Story of the Century", he is actually listed as being part of Cannon Company, but I suspect he was reassigned, possibly due to casualties in the 1st Battalion, to Company C - at least that is who is recorded as being @ Bettviller that day.
I sent letters in August 1998 to addresses I located thru the internet to those men I thought were with him that day - and got 2 responses. I will provide further names in a future message.
I did travel to France, and went to Bettviller - took many pictures. My complete lack of knowledge of French, coupled with no local who spoke English, hindered me slightly - although we found the town and nearby Maginot or Ziegfried line fortifications.
I lost Dad in 1971 - he talked little about the war, but I have his diary. And have heard some stories from relatives.
I have attempted a query of the national records, but it appears his records burned up in 1973 fire like so many others.
I am interested in finding anyone whose relative was there, or served with that company, regiment or division. Anyone with information, please respond back.
