Operation Hero: The after-school mentoring and tutoring program for Camp Pendleton families will start its second 10-week session the week of Jan. 10. Students in first through fifth grade get together twice a week to go over homework and participate in team building exercises and crafts. The free program, sponsored by the Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA, is designed to help families address issues such as the deployment of parents, military moves and feelings of isolation and low self-esteem. Paint ball park: The park is open Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekdays by reservation for private groups of 15 or more. Walk-on players are divided into beginner and advanced groups based on skill and equipment technology. All players are required to wear goggles or masks to protect their eyes. Daily admission $12. Players can rent gear at the park and play for the day for $44, including 500 paint balls. The park is at the south side of the base near Vandegrift Boulevard.
