Is This Saddam's Face in the Dirt?

The Herald Sun

COWERING on the ground, his face pressed into the dirt, Saddam Hussein is shown pinned down by a US soldier.

This dramatic picture, apparently taken moments after the former Iraqi dictator was captured, was submitted anonymously yesterday to a US website. It is believed to have been taken by a soldier involved in his capture at a farm near Saddam's home town of Tikrit last month.

Last night the Pentagon refused to confirm it was Saddam -- although officials were at pains not to deny it either.

If the grainy image does depict Saddam, it was probably taken moments after he emerged from the 2.5m spider hole where he had been hiding on December 13.

The picture was posted on a website operated by Military Advantage, an organisation that helps US servicemen with problems ranging from mortgages to university courses.

Spokesman Anne Dwane said she was convinced of the authenticity of the picture.

"It certainly looks like Saddam Hussein," she said.

The capture of Saddam was filmed by official army cameramen, but only a short clip showing medics checking his hair for lice and taking DNA swabs from his mouth has been released so far.
